“All my life I have been looking for answers. In painting, in art, I suddenly find myself.” VOL.

Volker Donig, “VOL.”, was born in Hamburg in 1960. Over the years, I often had little time and therefore my art tended to stay in the background. Helping my 4 children to get started, with an aligned compass, and advancing my career was more important.

In 2019, I positioned myself completely anew. The new journey began, my great adventure, the path to the depths of my being: painting.

My special love is Pop Art: striking, entertaining, allowing everything. However, not everything I sprays or paints is plainly pop. “I don’t care or I do care. What do I want to stand for in the future? Is today a good day to look at myself with sympathy?”

I love women. I want to be appreciative towards them and asks myself how men, who are shaped by patriarchy, can deal with women appropriately without abandoning what they stand for.

Subjects such as the Seven Deadly Sins, which shape our daily behaviour vicariously, and also dancing occupy me just as much as environmental catastrophes and developments in our world. What direction are we heading in? Where is our future?
Yet it is also about myself – about happy and also dark memories or issues like loyalty, trust and betrayal. My works reflect the battles I fights with Myself – with the claim to always remain reflective and to face my own demons.
